[고재윤의 Beverage Insight] 지하수 중 세계에서 가장 오래된 물, 뉴질랜드 와이웨라(Waiwera) 먹는샘물
우리나라는 7월이면 무더위가 한창이지만, 남반부의 뉴질랜드는 우리나라와 정반대로 초겨울이 시작된다. 전 세계에서 가장 자연 친화적이고 청정지대로 유명한 뉴질랜드 사람들은 ‘물(水), 흙(土), 사람(人)’을 가장 소중한 자원이라고 생각한다. 와이웨라(Waiwera) 먹는샘물은 북섬 오클랜드(Auckland)의 히비스코스(Hibiscus) 해안 근처에 있는 와이웨라 계곡의 수원지에서 취수한다. 특히 와이웨라 계곡은 자연경관이 아름다운 지역으로 알려져 있다. 와이웨라 지역은 아주 조용하고 깨끗하며, 남태평양 최대의 가장 청정한 대수층 중 하나로 지하 1500m 깊이에 사암으로 둘러싸여 오염이 되지 않고 숨겨진 태초의 물로 유명하다.질병을 고쳐주는 물 ‘와이(Wai)’는 뉴질랜드 원주민의 언어인 마오리(Māori) 말로 ‘물(Water)’을 의미한다. 그리고 ‘웨라(Wera)’는 ‘뜨거운’이라는 뜻으로 ‘Why-Wear-Ah’로 발음되는 ‘와이웨라(Waiwera)’는 ‘뜨거운 물’ 즉 온천을 의미한다. 역사적으로 와이웨라 지역의 물은 마오리족에게 질병을 고쳐주는 물, 즉 ‘의사’를 의미하는 ‘테 라타(Te Rata)’로 알려졌져 있다. 마오리족이 와이웨라 온천물로
