The Power of  Design

All of us have always been influenced by great design, whether for apparel, electronic goods, cosmetics or cars. We love the Apple Store, the google home page, the Vespa scooter& IKEA furniture, because of their minimalist design. We stop by shops walking down the street because something cool catches our eye whether it’s the shop design, the product merchandising or the catchy logo. However, several recent experiences have reinforced in my mind the growing importance of design in the overall customer experience. We can no longer avoid great design if we want to continue to manage and operate a growing business today.

A few years ago, I was staying with my daughter in Los Angeles, and noticed an attractive plastic cube of candy sitting on her desk. The packaging was unique to say the least and the logo communicated European origin to me. When I asked her about it that night, I was told that she received it as a gift from a talent agent in Hollywood she had been working with.  My daughter works in the TV industry and has daily interactions with talent agents, directors and actors so she is a great antenna for me about all things cool that are trending with that set of people.

The small plastic cube of candy from a company named Sugarfina, was one of those. I looked the company up online and saw they had several stores in Los Angeles with the flagship in Beverly Hills. Further investigation led to the knowledge that one of the founders, Rosie, was an MBA graduate from UCLA, the same university as myself. Upon further research I was able to locate her email, make the introduction and several days later was meeting with her and the co-founder, Josh, in Beverly Hills.  The store was gorgeous and very Japanese looking with a touch of France.

The packaging revolved around the bento box with different sizes depending upon how many cubes you were buying.  There were candies from all over the world and very unique ones at that – Dome Perignon champagne gummy bears for example. In fact, it was obvious that these products were for adults not kids given that so many of them were infused with various alcohol beverages such as tequila (from George Clooney’s Casamigos brand) and whiskey.  It was also clear that this was heavily a gifting business.  You made a real statement when you sent or brought this packaging to a friend or business acquaintance. The store design, the logo and the packaging were as important as the products itself. It was no wonder that this brand captured the interest of the Hollywood crowd which is some of the best WOM marketing you can ask for, and no accident that the first store was placed in the height of chic, Beverly Hills.

Despite having only 41 stores in the United States, the brand has over 160,000 followers on Instagram and growing daily. Word gets around fast in the digital age and it is not surprising to see the brand selling on various e-commerce websites in China and being copied elsewhere in Asia.  Good design attracts customers and makes them feel better about their purchase experiences.

There is a coffee shop concept from Kyoto that has only three stores in Japan, but is known worldwide. In fact they have sold franchises to almost all the major markets in the world primarily due to WOM.  Their flagship store in Hong Kong is very eye catching located right next to the major exit to the Hong Kong ferry piers in the IFC mall. They have three unique selling points compared to Starbucks. First, they also have a minimalist design and only sell coffee products with few if any seats. They are not renting seats like Starbucks but encourage you to take away the coffee and enjoy it wherever you want. Second, they do instant roasting so you can order coffee beans that are roasted while you wait – maximum freshness. Starbucks coffee is shipped from the USA so is anywhere between 1-3 months old. Freshness is important if you are a real coffee lover and you can get it as %Arabica. Third, the espresso products are top class compared with Starbucks. The concept was developed by a Japanese with no prior food service experience and that is why probably it works to well – he has no preconceived ideas.  Is this a Starbucks killer? Absolutely not but it will do well within its defined niche as a third wave coffee concept with great coffee, great design and a great story. If I want a great cappuccino drink in Hong Kong then I am going to visit %Arabica.

The last example I can cite is Aesop, the personal skin care company from Australia. I noticed this brand several years ago walking down Hollywood Road in Hong Kong. I was drawn in by the shop design and the beautifully designed packaging. The staff were well dressed – no white coats like Clinique or Kiehl’s - and extremely knowledgeable about their products.  I loved the product descriptions and the fragrances and instantly bought a few items to try out.  Three years later I use Aesop exclusively for body wash, shampoo, moisturizer and now deodorant.  An important selling point for me was that all the products were 100% natural. The Aesop brand stands for simplicity & authenticity. They have no big marketing budgets like L’Oréal or Estee Lauder and but they do well anyway. They place their shops in strategic locations where their higher end customer will frequent and sell the store experience.

Have you spent enough money and thought on store design & packaging? Does your menu or product stand for anything unique or original? You may very well owe your survival to these questions if you focus on them now!
