세계 최대의 공정무역 축제, World Fairtrade Challenge 2017
국제공정무역기구가 주최하고 전 세계 100여 개국에서 동시에 개최되는 온·오프라인 캠페인인 ‘World Fairtrade Challenge 2017’이 오는 5월 12~14일 열린다. 본 캠페인은 공정무역을 전 세계인들과 함께 즐기고 알리기 위한 취지로 친구, 동료, 가족, 손님 등 소중한 이들에게 공정무역 인증제품을 선물하거나 함께 나누며 진행된다. 국내 공정무역인증제품 판매량(2015년 기준 약 190억 원)은 대폭 증가하고 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 전 세계인들과 함께하는 공정무역 축제를 만들 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 자세한 사항은 fairtradechallenge.org에서 한국어로 확인할 수 있다.

공정무역과 여성
국제공정무역기구는 여성노동력착취금지, 인권 존중의 원칙을 가지고 이를 실천하기 위해 Gender strategy를 시행하고 있다. 최근 케냐의 화훼산업에 종사하는 여성들이 직면한 어려움에 주목했고, 미망인이자 세 아들의 어머니인 로즈마리를 인터뷰했다. 케냐의 공정무역 인증 농장, Panda Flowers의 감독관인 그녀는 “공정무역 덕분에 많은 것이 변했다. 여성과 남성은 동등한 권리를 갖고 있으며 정규 근무 시간, 정해진 휴가 및 눈에 띄게 개선된 안전 규칙을 갖추게 됐다.”라고 전했다. 또한, 공정무역프리미엄을 사용해 산부인과 병원을 세울 수 있었고, 이 덕에 많은 지역 여성들이 혜택을 받고 있다. 아직 완벽한 양성평등 달성까지는 숙제가 남았지만 2016~2020 Gender Strategy를 비롯해 업계 최초로 모든 케냐 꽃 농장에 적용하는 성희롱 규정을 발표하는 등 여성 평등을 위해 끊임없이 노력하고 있다.

She is a supervisor at Panda Flowers in Kenya and said, “Fairtrade has changed a lot, women and men now have the same rights. There are regular working hours, fixed leave days, and significantly improved safety regulations." Fairtrade Premium projects have also led to benefits for women in the wider community, such as a maternity clinic at Lake Naivasha financed in part by Fairtrade Premium money. However, more work to be done. Fairtrade puts effort by establishing 2016~2020 Gender Strategy and launching a model sexual harassment policy for all Kenyan flower farms, a first for the industry.

As well as these green amenities, the Dorint Hotel also sets up entire rooms with Fairtrade linen products, including towels, bed linen and bathrobes. Towels can be an integral part of a guest’s hotel experience and there are many excellent Fairtrade products. Attention to detail has been made to many aspects of this hotel’s Fairtrade commitment, with even the flowers being Fairtrade.

공정무역인증면화(Fairtrade Cotton)
면화는 전 세계적으로 약 3500만 헥타르에서 재배된다. 전 세계 75개국 내 약 1억 명이 면화 생산에 종사하고 있으며, 2013~14년에 514억 달러 시장규모를 달성했다. 이 중 90%가 국제공정무역기구가 집중하고 있는 개발도상국에서 살고 있다. 말리, 세네갈, 카메룬, 부르키나파소와 같은 서 아프리카 국가에 대부분의 공정무역인증조합이 활동 중이며 인도 역시 중요한 공정무역인증면화 생산국으로 부상했다. 2013~14년 기준, 공정무역 인증면화 농민들은 1만 9300톤의 공정무역 인증면화를 판매했고, 약 12억 이상의 공정무역프리미엄(장려금)을 지급받았다. 이중 41%를 교육, 보건, 인프라 구축과 같은 지역사회 개발 프로젝트를 위해 사용했으며, 그 외 면화 생산자의 훈련이나 장비 구입을 위해 사용한다. 공정무역인증면화로 만든 제품은 의류, 가방, 타월, 침구, 모자 등 다양하다.
Cotton is grown on around 35 million hectares worldwide. The main cotton producing countries are China, India, Pakistan, and the US. Around 100 million rural households are engaged in cotton production in more than 75 countries across the globe, making it a $51.4 billion business in 2013~14. Ninety percent of the world’s cotton farmers live in developing countries, which is where Fairtrade focuses its efforts. Most Fairtrade small producer organizations are based in West Africa - namely Mali, Senegal, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. India has become another important production country, growing the most Fairtrade certified cotton globally. Products made from Fairtrade cotton include clothing, bags, and homeware items such as towels. In 2013~14, Fairtrade farmers sold 19,300 tonnes of cotton on Fairtrade terms and received more than one million euro in Fairtrade Premium payments. The farmers invested about 41 percent of the Fairtrade Premium in community projects for education, healthcare and infrastructure development.
