Hotel Design Story ] Legacy is the future

St. Regis Macau Cotai Strip, designed by Wilson Associates

The Grand Entrance

Lobby Area

Bar Area

Guest Rooms

The Manor

The great-grandfather of the hotel owner was a connoisseur, living life with a spirit of adventure and curiosity. He sought a heightened experience beyond societal confines that propelled him to travel to the world’s most exotic locations in search of enlightenment. And so he went on a journey to capture the essence of culture. He took his progressive mind, refined palette and distinguished eye with him, creating a host of pied-a-terres around the world.

Landing on the island of Macao, the great-grandson is intrigued by the island and the vital role it plays. It provides physical and economic sustenance; it fosters the exchange of people, goods and ideas; it replenishes the soul; it is forever bound to the commands of the moon and governs the tides. Taking this coastal context into account, the design team created the hotel to function as a safe harbor and a strong vessel. The entire property is grounded in reverence for water, the Pearl River, international trade and exploration.

Grand Entrance
The magnificent bas relief works of art that frame the grand façade of The St. Regis Macao, Cotai Central have their own story to tell. Two main panels, each measuring 9.82 meters high and 16.10 meters wide are complemented by an auspicious eight 11.16 meters high by 5.40 meters wide vertical pieces. Each of the larger panels was crafted from over 40 tons of clay and the final masterpieces comprise a combined 50 plates, each weighing 800 kilograms. The finished pièce de résistance represents a culmination of a six-month design process, preceding eight months of production by a team of 30 mould makers, casters and sculptors.
The creator of these extensive yet intricate works of art is a Portuguese artist who drew inspiration from seascape watercolour paintings by 18th century English artist George Chinnery. The panel on the left of the entrance is an artistic representation of Green Island fronted by three Chinese junks while the right interprets Chinnery’s painting of Praia Grande, a historic port and the docklands of Macau. The vertical flanking pieces may appear to be identical wave motifs, however upon close inspection, one will realise that each panel is a carefully thought through composition, each one as different to its neighbour as night is to day.
It is the magic of light that brings to life the artistry behind these bas relief sculptures. In his design process, he had to produce just the right depths and angles to perfectly capture natural sunlight while working with strategic illumination at night to play up shadow patterns and add a seductive new dimension to his creations.

Lobby Area
Modern interpretations of east and west cultures collide in the lobby area, pulling symbolism from ancient Chinese and Portuguese features. As patrons enter the lobby, they are awed by a striking sculptural staircase whose undulating curves mimic the structure of a ship's bow.
Above the grand staircase resides a curved, blown glass chandelier in shades of amber, bronze and gold, alluding to ship’s sails full of wind. At the top of the stairs, a carved wood relief panel of stylized waves sets the backdrop for the unrivaled St. Regis concierge service. To anchor the contemporary style of the lobby, the grand space is finished with a glossy, highly figured Bird’s Eye Maple wood. Inspired by the owner’s collection of Bentley vehicles, this wood species is known for its use in premier finish detailing.
A hand-carved glass screen was commissioned to be placed behind the sit-down reception desks. In a nod to Eurasian pattern and form, the screen is adorned with a scene inspired by Portuguese ceramic tiles and executed with traditional Chinese techniques.

Bar Area
The mural at The St. Regis Bar tells the tale of Macau as a place of harmony - where both Chinese and Portuguese have lived side-by-side peacefully for centuries. Portuguese artist, Gil Araujo is the mastermind behind the two-tone Harmony bar mural, an illustration of Macau - both past and present - and the two contrasting cultures of Portugal and China were at the heart of the inspiration behind this distinctive creation. It features more than 8000 separate sections of painted glass across four layers and is supported by six LED screens to add depth and texture to the piece.
By designing the mural in this way, the artist was able to create a multi-dimensional effect, with the layers showing through the LED illumination. Each of the 8000 sections of painted glass had to be painted individually using a special Spanish paint for a stained glass look. The green centers embody the flag of the Macau autonomous region, blue and white hues represent Portugal while the reds and yellows are a symbol of Chinese culture.
Again evoking the form and detailing of a Bentley, the hotel’s signature bar walls are lacquered in a platinum finish. The Cognac room doors are opened with French-stitched leather pulls that allude to the craftsmanship of the Bentley steering wheel.

Guest Rooms
The door to the guest room swings open, and the refined yet glamorous design of the space welcomes the weary traveler to rest and prepare for the adventures of their stay. A first glance reveals a delicate, mother-of-pearl bed wall framing a signature St. Regis bed. It rises from behind the genuine leather headboard with a radial center that symbolizes the ripples of an evolving culture generated from the heart of old Macao and going outward from Cotai to the rest of the world. Bird’s eye maple frames this element as an oyster would hold the beautiful pearl within. The emerald blue color scheme is artfully infused in the space with the Portuguese-inspired bed pillow, the abstract cloud carpet concept, and the trim on the drapery.
The guest rooms hold a distinct cross-cultural focal point: the tea service cabinets with Chinese architectural detailing and lacquered panels inset into a transitional wood frame. The tea cabinets facilitate tea and beverage service -- a very important ritual in keeping with Chinese traditions and also with St. Regis luxury. The drapery has a pale golden lattice fretwork woven throughout, tying the guest to the Chinese roots of the environment. In the bathroom, Calacatta Luna marble granite recalls the pristine color of a pearl found in the bay while the dark vanity stone accent resembles the darkness of the sand found on Hac Sa beach. The finishes of parchment, bronze, glass, leather, and custom cream lacquer are layered deftly throughout the room to communicate the Eurasian flavor of Macau and the seductive call of the Cotai strip.

The Manor
The Wilson Associates designed The Manor restaurant recently won the Silver Award for Fine Dining Restaurant in the Hong Kong Restaurant Interior Design Awards (HKRIDA) 2016 competition. The Manor is a multi-experience dining venue fashioned after a fictitious Ambassador’s colonial residence. Five individual spaces lure guests in with distinctive settings, seductive touches and delightful signatures that are unmistakably St. Regis.
Taking on the charm of solariums and conservatories from around the world, The Verandah is fresh and bright with whimsical choices in tile and light fittings to create an experience of garden-inspired elegance. The Dining Room represents the heart of the home and a place of refined comfort with a soaring ceiling, soft lighting, tailored architectural details and timeless furniture. Touches of darker colors fuse with a brighter palette to enhance the richness of the space.

The Wine Gallery complements as an intimate setting surrounded by sophistication reserved for the Ambassador’s most discerning friends. Guests dine in plush elegance enveloped by his most sumptuous wines and meticulously curated art collection. The Penthouse Kitchen is a space that can be closed off, combining an open kitchen that allows for a dedicated chef. The rustic finishes deliver a casual yet exclusive experience. Finally, The Library is a secluded enclave in a contemporary yet comfortable setting with ornamental touches, bookshelves and quietly elegant furnishings.
