좌충우돌 서울 적응기

“자네 이제 서울로 가네. 날씨가 추울테니 자켓이 필요할거야!”라고 나의 보스는 말했다. 나는 호주 시드니 해변가에서 나고 자랐으며 눈 내리는 것을 보기란 사실상 불가능한 인도에서 7년이라는 시간을 보냈다. 무엇을 기대해야 할 지 알 수 없었으나, 걱정은 되지 않았다. 와우! 정말 굉장한 도시 아닌가! 신당동 떡볶이, 명동의 36cm이나 되는 소프트 아이스크림과 강남에서 마시는 막걸리 등 할 것들이 수두룩했고, 최근 인도에서의 7년 동안의 시간과는 믿기 힘들 정도로 달랐다. 

한국에 온 이후로, 나의 관심사는 발리우드에서 K-POP으로 변하고 있다. 전 세계 사람들이 모두 열광했던 것처럼, 나도 강남스타일 노래에 맞춰 춤추던 사람 중에 하나였지만, 내가 서울 강남지역에서 일을 하게 될 줄이야! 몇 주 전에는 싸이의 공연까지 보게 되었다. 그를 실제로 보게 된 것도 너무나 반가운 일이였지만, 소녀시대를 본 건 아직까지 믿을 수가 없다. 인도와 한국에서 일하는 것이 어떻게 다른지 궁금하다면? 제일 다른 점은 ‘절박함’이다. 인도에서는 항상 내일을 생각했다면(내일로 미루었다면), 내일의 일을 오늘 미리 준비하는 한국 사람들의 모습이 매우 보기 좋았다. 미리 준비하는 한국인들의 모습은 성공으로 이끄는 중요한 역할을 했을 것이며, 새로 일어날 무언가에 대해, 전 세계가 그 어느 나라보다도 한국을 먼저 주목하는 것도 이 때문이 아닐까 싶다.

스타일을 사랑하는 한국 사람들의 모습은 내가 마음에 들어 하는 것 중에 하나이다. 스타일리시하게 맞춰 입은 사람들이 매우 좋다. 앞서나가는 한국 사람들의 패션 감각은 나에게 영감을 준다. 난 이 곳을 “세컨드 룩 서울”이라 일컫는다. 왜냐하면 사람들은 외출하기 전 집 거울 앞에 서서 자신의 모습을 보며 마지막으로 점검하고 완성시키기 때문이다. 주말에 강남에서 쇼핑을 하거나, 홍대나 인사동의 인파를 보면 모두가 그들만의 멋진 스타일을 표현하려는 모습을 보게 된다. 

패션에 관심이 있고, 쇼핑을 좋아한다면 단언컨데 우리 JW 메리어트 호텔 서울을 방문해야만 한다. 만나보기 어려웠던 다양한 디자이너 브랜드들을 모두 접할 수 있는 신세계백화점 강남점이 우리 호텔과 함께 위치 해 있기 때문이다. 그로 인하여 신용카드를 쉴 새 없이 긁곤 한다. 아르마니 브랜드가 6개나 입점해 있다 보니 매번 쇼핑할 때 마다 고민을 하게 되지만, 컨트롤을 잘 하려고 노력한다. 

나는 한국에서 비즈니스 하는 것이 좋다. 비즈니스 상에서의 존중이나 명예심, 예의 등, 내가 꼭 지키고자 하는 것들, 지금 시대에서 있기 힘든 좋은 요소들이 실재한다. 음식은 어떠한가? 나는 한국 음식을 정말 좋아한다. 인도에 있을 때 친구들 중에 한국 사람들도 많았으며, 언제나 최고 품질의 육류를 호텔에 제공해 주었다. 인도 음식의 버터치킨, 달, 난도 너무나 좋아하지만, 난 사람들이 한국의 파전을 꼭 맛봐야한다고 생각한다. 특히 야식이 생각나는 새벽에 파전을 즐겨먹게 된다. 또한 한국 호프집도 빠질 수 없다. 치킨도 좋고, 맥주도 좋고, 치맥은 끝내 준다. 나는 호프집이란 빈 속에 가면 안된다는 것도 재빠르게 알게 되었다. 무엇보다도, 호프에서 일어난 일은 호프에서 끝난다는 것이 가장 큰 장점이다. 다음날 멀쩡하게 일하러 나오며 한 말이다. 

한국에 오기 전 나는 주로 한국 불고기와 비빔밥을 먹어봤는데, 한국에 와서 새롭게 좋아하게 된 소스 ‘쌈장’은 정말 어느 곳에서도 맛보지 못한 최고의 맛을 가지고 있다. 인도에 있을 당시 소위 ‘반대차선’으로 다니는 법을 배워야만 했다. 인도사람들은 도로교통법에 상관없이 뒤죽박죽으로 운전을 할 때가 있었기 때문이다. 적어도 한국인들은 자기 차선은 지키며 운전을 한다. 나는 인도에서의 생활이 그리울테지만, 그곳의 혼잡한 도로교통법은 그립지 않을 것 같다. 내 말이 믿기지 않는다면, 구글에서 검색을 해보는 것도 좋을듯 하다.

나는 인도에서의 지냈던 시간이 매우 값졌고, 그 곳에서 만나 알게된 친구들과의 시간 또한 매우 그리울 것이다. 하지만 나는 드디어 우리 가족들과 함께 지낼 수 있는 서울이라는 도시를 만나게 되었다고 믿는다. 서울은 우리 가족들이 다시금 묶어주었고, 우리는 여기서 많은 새로운 경험을 나누고 있다. 어떤 것들은 매우 낯설지만, 그게 우리가 이런 직업을 선택한 이유다. 나의 아이들은 벌써 서울이란 도시에 푹 빠져, 벌써 이 곳을 집이라 일컫는다.

Settling in Seoul: on Life in a New Culture

“You are moving to Seoul!” my Vice President said, and “Oh you may need a jacket it will be cold.” Well I am boy from the beach in Sydney Australia and have spent the last 7 years in India where there is not too much snow…in fact none. I had no idea what to expect but I needn’t have worried. Wow! What a city! Whether its teokboki in Shindangdong, 36cm Ice Cream in Myeongdong or Makgeolli in Gangnam there is so much to do and the difference to my last seven years has been beyond belief.

I am transitioning my taste from Bollywood to K Pop and its fun. I mean I had, like the rest of the world; I danced to Gangnam Style but who knew I would work in Gangnam!! I even watched Psy perform a couple of weeks ago. He was great but seeing Girls Generation was out of this world. What are the differences between working in India and Korea? Well I guess the main difference is the sense of urgency. In India there will always be tomorrow but I love how Korea is so focused on preparing for tomorrow today. It’s this drive to succeed that is the reason why the world looks to Korea for what is new tomorrow.

Koreans love for style is right up my alley. I love how well put together everyone is. The fashion forward sense is so inspiring. I call this place “second look Seoul” because everyone has one last look in the mirror before stepping out, to make sure they have a complete look. Whether it is Sunday shopping in Gangnam, a night out in Hongdae or artifact shopping in Insadong everyone strives to design the next hot look. If you love shopping for this fashion you just need to come to my hotel.

There is every designer brand I have ever seen under one roof in the Shinsegae Department store under the JW Marriott. The credit card certainly gets beaten up down there. It’s hard to decide which one of the 6 Armani brand boutiques to shop in…it’s a tough decision but I seem to manage. I love doing business in Seoul, the respect, honor and courtesy I am afforded is hard to believe but I know this time something that seems too good to be true is in fact true. What about the food? Well I love Korean food and always have. In fact I had many Korean expat friends in India and they always had the best supply of beef and pork. I mean I love Butter Chicken, Dal and naan bread but the world needs to discover Pajun….I simply love this at 3am when feeling a bit peckish. Then there are the fried chicken hofs. Fried chicken…good, beer…..good, together…… spectacular. I have learnt quickly not to go to these places on an empty stomach or there may be a disaster. But the best thing is what happens in a Hof stays in a Hof, as long as you turn up to work on time the next day. I have had Bulgogi and Bipimbap before having it in Korea with my new favorite condiment “ssamjang” is like nothing you have ever tasted.

I have had to learn to drive on the “wrong” side of the road. At least people in Korea try to maintain driving in their lanes!!! I will miss my time in India but I will not miss the traffic or chaotic road rules. If you do not believe me you should Google it. Ultimately I loved my time in India and will miss the countless friends I made there but I believe I have finally found the city that my family and I were supposed to live in. Seoul has reunited us as a family unit and we are sharing so many wonderful experiences here. Some are very strange to us but that’s why we do this type of work.
